September arrived with great expectations and excitement in the Floral Design World as we made history with the inauguration of the first “All Africa Cup” (welcoming visitors and participants from Zimbabwe, Kenya and South Africa) as part of our 2018 South African Floral Union Congress under the very capable leadership of our President, Mrs Vaughn Harrington.  Together with members from the KwaZulu Natal Floral Art Clubs this event as well as the annual Floriate competition, Designer of the Year,  Demonstrator of the Year, and an international demonstration was hosted for all members of SAFU and what an event it turned out to be!  Absolutely spectacular and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
The event took place at the Royal Agricultural Show Grounds in Pietermaritzburg during the Witness Garden Show from the 5th-9th September.  The congress kicked off on the Wednesday with the Floriate competitors doing their designs in 9 different classes as well as 2 childrens classes.  The Designer of the Year competition was one of these classes and the setting up of the Honorary designs also took place at the same time.
Take a look at the Honorary designs by the various KwaZulu Natal clubs - the theme was KwaZulu Natal at it's Best.

A busy day with designers working frantically to finish before the 4-00pm cut off time.
Competition done and the day concluded with the Welcome Evening:  Catering by Mrs Classina Powell and Floral designs by Mrs Helen Bellew.
Thursday saw the start of the Judging of all the competition classes and two Workshops  -  The morning workshop was by Felicity Ambrose of Zimbabwe.  She demonstrated how to make harpene from New Zealand Flax and also how to make skeletonised leaves.  All this was then used to create beautiful abstract wall hangings.  This workshop was very popular and thoroughly enjoyed by all.  Thank you Felicity.
Felicity with her exciting design!
Thursday afternoon was the second workshop by Kenya -  Corrugated Cardboard.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Vaughn Harrington very kindly stepped in and did the workshop, assisted by Morag Flight.
Another creative workshop with inspiring ideas for dinner tables, weddings etc.  Again thoroughly enjoyed by all - Thank you Vaughn.
Judging completed and the Floriate Flower Show prize giving was next.  Congratulations to these members for their outstanding designs!
